Death Valley posts hottest month ever recorded on Earth, for the
second July in a row

Last July, California's Death Valley endured the hottest month ever
measured on the planet. This July ended up even hotter.

Over both day and night, the temperature at Death Valley averaged
108.1 degrees, ahead of the mark set a year ago by about a
half-degree. That previous mark had broken a record that stood for 100 years.

This year's exceptional temperature extreme at one of the planet's
hottest locations puts an exclamation mark on a month in which
record-high temperatures have fallen on every continent in the
Northern Hemisphere.

[Climate change is supercharging a hot and dangerous summer]

Searing heat in Death Valley in July, is of course, the norm. So it
might be hard to contemplate it being unusually hot in such a
place. But this July's temperature has averaged nearly 6 degrees
above the average of 102.2.

Consider some of these incredible numbers:

* The high temperature hit at least 120 degrees on 21 days, sailing
past the normal high of 116.5 degrees.

* From July 24 to 27, the high soared to 127 degrees setting records
on each of those 4 dates. This mark was not far from the
location's highest reliable temperature measurement in recent
decades of 129 set on June 30, 2013.

* The low temperature remained above 100 degrees on 10 days.

The measurements come from Furnace Creek, in the heart of the valley,
at 190 feet below sea level. It has been the official weather station
for Death Valley for more than 100 years, dating back to 1911. (Since
the station is a cooperative, not officially run by the National
Weather Service, there are a couple of years with missing data.)

Record-Setting Temp At Death Valley Discredited

Published on August 6, 2018
Written by Michael Bastasch

A veteran meteorologist claims to have evidence the hottest temperature ever recorded in the entire world at Death Valley was probably man-made, but not in the way one would think.

It turns out parked RVs and solar panels may have artificially driven up temperature readings at nearby, poorly cited thermometers used by government officials at Death Valley National Park in California, according to meteorologist and science blogger Anthony Watts.

“First, yes there was a weather pattern in July that made much of the southwest hotter than usual,” Watts wrote Thursday on his blog Watts Up With That.

The National Weather Service tentatively reported Wednesday that Death Valley hit its hottest month ever, averaging a whopping 108.1 degrees Fahrenheit in July. If true it would be the hottest monthly average recorded in the world.

“But, what really caused the increased average high temperature to be a record setter? The answer is simple; the environment around the weather station used to measure the official temperature changed dramatically in the past few years,” Watts wrote.

Watts actually took photos of Death Valley’s temperature sensors during 2008 and compared them to more recent photos and Google Earth satellite images. Watts also looked at federal logs tracking changes at weather station sites.

What he found was “new infrastructure, such as solar panels, parking lots, and air conditioning heat exchanger plants.”

RVs, solar panels, and air conditioners generate heat, which can influence temperature readings at nearby weather stations that aren’t cited correctly. Parking lots and other artificial surfaces can also raise local temperature readings by retaining heat during the day and shedding it at night.

“None of these things were there when the original weather station was placed at Furnace Creek,” Watts wrote.

“Arguably, these land-use changes all have a cumulative effect on the temperature measured in Death Valley,” Watts wrote. “Because the environment has changed so much, its folly to think of it as a metric for any climate change, because the forces from the land-use changes are far greater than any posited ‘climate change.’”

In fact, U.K. meteorologists recently rejected a record-high temperature reading at Motherwell, Scotland, because an ice cream truck had idled nearby with its engine on, possibly contaminating the reading.

Watts has spent years scrutinizing the siting and technical aspects of weather stations across the world to see if their readings are being contaminated by artificial heat sources. Watts co-authored a recent study with climate scientist John Christy and Texas state climatologist John Nielsen-Gammon on how poorly sited weather stations can impact climate monitoring.

When it comes to long-term climate monitoring, meteorologists are becoming more conscious about station siting. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) even started a system of about 100 state-of-the-art climate monitoring stations sited in areas not likely to be developed.

Watts also compared the Death Valley visitor site thermometers to the nearby NOAA station that’s part of the new USCRN network, which is sited about a mile away in the desert, far from artificial heat sources.

The difference between the alleged record reading at Death Valley and Stovepipe Wells for the month of July was 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit.

“A 1.5-degree difference in the monthly average, and not a record-breaker,” Watts wrote. “The old record for the monthly average was 107.4 degrees according to the NWS official quoted in the AP article.”

Gordo keeps falling for the "desmogblog" ..a highly politicized climate alarmist website that attacks skeptics of catastrophic man-caused climate change and the organizations that support them. Co-founded by a convicted money launderer, the site is controlled by the controversial James Hoggan, owner of Hoggan & Associates, a for-profit public relations firm based in Canada.

Founded by a Convicted Money Launderer

While James Hoggan runs the site, the organization got its seed money in 2006 from co-founder John David Lefebvre, who plead guilty the following to felony money laundering charges. Lefebvre admitted to laundering billions of dollars in illegal gambling proceeds through his company, NETeller – a British online money transfer company that also traded in carbon dioxide emission credits.

Lefebvre cut a deal with the U.S. Justice Department and was sentenced June 29, 2007 by federal Judge P. Kevin Castel in the U.S. New York Southern District Court to 45 days imprisonment, one year of supervised release, and fined $750,000. On September 23, 2011, Lefebvre was ordered to pay a forfeiture obligation of $40 million. DeSmogBlog’s founding 2006 grant, which Hoggan says was more than $300,000, came from Lefebvre, who was engaged in criminal activity. This is ironic, according to Popular Technology, because DeSmogBlog’s “favorite tactic is to attempt to smear those they disagree with as funded by ‘dirty money.’”

Popular Technology describes DeSmogBlog as “a smear site founded by a scientifically unqualified public relations man,” adding:

“Since its creation in 2006 the site has done nothing but post poorly researched propaganda with a clear intent to smear respected scientists, policy analysts or groups who dare oppose an alarmist position on global warming. Their articles frequently reference unreliable sources such as Wikipedia and Sourcewatch since they are unable to find any fact based criticisms of those they attack in respected news sources.”

Their real agenda was disclosed in a Climatic Research Unit (CRU) leaked email dated December 2007 from senior DeSmogBlog writer Richard Littlemore to Michael Mann.

Dr. Ball transcribed Littlemore’s email and added explanatory notations and emphases. A facsimile of the unmarked original is at EcoWho:

Hi Michael,

I’m a DeSmogBlog writer (I got your email from Kevin Grandia) and I am trying to fend off the latest announcement that global warming has not actually occurred in the 20th century.

It looks to me like Gerd Burger is trying to deny climate change by “smoothing,” “correcting” or otherwise rounding off the temperatures that we know for a flat fact have been recorded since the 1970s, but I am out of my depth (as I am sure you have noticed: we’re all about PR here, not much about science) so I wonder if you guys have done anything or are going to do anything with Burger’s intervention in Science. I’d be delighted for any response, no matter how brief, or for directions to any existing critique.
