Fueling the Distortion: How Oil Subsidies Skew Markets and Stifle Clean Energy
Earth Day, 15 Oct 2024
Big Oil dodges taxes with subsidies, undercutting clean energy and keeping
America hooked on fossil fuels. Meanwhile, you pay the price for their profits.
Direct and indirect fossil subsidies are on the rise. At the end of
the 2010s they were around 6% of global GDP. In the past couple years
that's crossed 7%. Russia has the dubious distinction of paying
the most to its fossil bidness -- spending around 40% of national
income on supporting it.
From a 2019 IMF paper the per capita support in US broke down as:

As a comparison the average American spends about $US2300 per year
on gasoline. Turns out the other 2300 they really pay is "hidden"
in broken-down roads and infrastructure and lack of services
(dont talk with an American about childcare at the moment).
