From the stats page at cal fire:

CALIFORNIA TOTAL WILDLAND FIRE STATS YTD
Year-To-Date (YTD) is for current year, last year, and 5-year average,
as of the "Updated" date indicated above.
INTERVAL WILDLAND FIRES ACRES
2024 Combined YTD (CALFIRE & US Forest Service) 4,521 687,191
2023 Combined YTD (CALFIRE & US Forest Service) 3,680 25,272
5-Year Average (same interval) 4,237 122,071

I.e. 2024 is now 5.6 more than recent normals for the same months.
When I last checked the numbers about 1m ago 2024 was at or below normal levels.

Finally, we suggest that 2024 is likely to be off the chart as the
warmest year on record. Without inside information, that would be a
dangerous prediction, but we proffer it because it is unlikely that
the current La Nina will continue a fourth year. Even a little futz of
an El Nino - like the tropical warming in 2018-19, which barely
qualified as an El Nino - should be sufficient for record global
temperature. A classical, strong El Nino in 2023-24 could push global
temperature to about +1.5°C relative to the 1880-1920 mean, which is
our estimate of preindustrial temperature.

51,200-Year-Old Cave Art, Likely the World's Oldest, May Not Have Been Made
by [modern] Humans
The Debrief, 27 Jul 2024
New evidence reaffirms that cave art on the Indonesian island of
Sulawesi is the oldest known in the world, according to a study that
now dates the enigmatic paintings to 51,200 years ago.
The findings push back the timescales on human activity on Sulawesi,
raising new questions about the origins of the island's ancient art
and its relationship to early human migrations.
[With paintings dated with a new laser ablation method possibly
pre-dating (according to some est) the time when modern humans moved
out of Africa into the rest of the world hints that some of the
earliest representational art may have been created by
now-presumed-extinct "relatives"].

Just reviewing some work I did for some cal local govt agencies in 2017.
While there is huge variability due to local conditions like elevation
and roadways, the basic climate part of the modeling showed across
the state the average trends were:
1 deg more in daily TMAX == fire intensity +4%
1 mm more in daily PRCP == fire intensity -23%

Overall result: hot dry weather == bad news for Cal Fire & agencies.
